CJ's Cloverfield Review

Cloverfield was first debuted as a mysteriously unnamed trailer before 07’s Transformers and just as producer JJ Abrams (he of TV’s Lost) hoped, me and my friends immediately searched and scoured Imdb.com for this strange movie. More and more weird and unique news would come out and the movie became Cloverfield, a name still unfitting for the movie, at least to the naked eye it is. If you already don’t know Cloverfield is a Blair Witch Project handheld camera meets Godzilla’s monster style epic. The movies creativity lies in the filming. If you’ve seen Jaws you know that the shark is not shown fully until 3/4ths into the movie. The same goes for this movie, and we don’t see what physically attacks the city until our camera man decides to show us. On top of that the monster looks cool, and there are enough Easter eggs to keep you coming back for more. The other great thing is the movie is a brisk 87 minutes, so it doesn't waste our time. Ironically all the way back in Desert Cinema my co-writer Steve Sparks called the then 1-18-08 preview “Maybe the greatest trailer ever made “ That was 2007, and while Cloverfield turned out to be a great gimmick, is it a one trick pony. Grade—B+
