Up in the Air Trailer
Phenomenal. Is Jason Reitman the director to come out in the past 5 years? Thank You for Smoking was original, innovative, and was an arthouse triumph. The same could be said for Juno even more so, what with its 100 million dollar domestic gross and Best Picture nomination. Up in the Air looks like it could do the same thing. The addition of a more major actor in the lead (Ellen Page and Aaron Eckheart are big but in a smaller demographic) should give this movie a bit more of the pull it deserves. Excited, and it's never too early to throw around the phrase "best movie of 2009" because this movie certainly has the potential. Grade - A

Sherlock Holmes Trailer
This is pretty much the trailer I expected would be released. It's what we all expected a Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes to be. Lots of explosions and snarky British-ness. But that said that's by no means a bad thing. It looks pretty good. Downey Jr. does what he does best and delivers over the top seriousness to make it funny (Tropic Thunder and Iron Man). Jude Law doesn't get alot of screen time in the trailer and that is an issue for me because as prevelent as Holmes is to the story I was expecting a buddy-cop atmosphere. Aside from the opening scene of the trailer (Holmes jumped out of a window!?!?!) I was not OVERLY impressed with it though. It looks good, but it has a ways to go before it fully convinces me. Grade - B+

Well this secures 2 slots for Best Picture Nominees 2009
How do I know these two films will be getting nominations for best picture come 2010? The Academy loves Cormac McCarthy adaptations (No Country for Old Men anyone??) and they love gritty, dark films. And they love Rob Marshall films (i.e. Chicago and Memoirs of a Geisha). Here are your 2 films, both look amazing. You're Welcome. Grades - ...A!

District 9 trailer
J.J. Abrams revolutionized the world with Cloverfield. No denying it. But this new movie District 9 smells buggy (Pardon the Pun), something out of the Abrams playbook. Cryptic teaser that throws a huge cliffhanger esc twist at the end, interviews in a first person type of feel, and then BAM! Sci-Fi twist! It looks amazing, and Neill Blomkamp's style is something I dig. When he released his Halo shorts a couple years back, they looked equally as interesting. We'll see. Grade - A

Bruno/The Hangover Trailer
What is going on here? Two of the funniest movies of the year already have released trailers today. Bruno seems to be just like Borat, and guess what? Everybody loved Borat. And The Hangover just seems all around great. Look for the Mike Tyson punch at the end. Funniest thing maybe ever. Grade for both - A

Taking Woodstock Trailer
I'm not an Ang Lee "fan". I think Brokeback Mountain is GOOD, but extremely over hyped, Hulk is one of the worst movies ever, and Crouching Tiger is average. But Taking Woodstock has me excited for this Lee film. Check it out. I think it has a lot of potential and if it remains under 2 hours, could be a sleeper his of this year. Looks great. Grade - B+

Gigantic (Indie Dramedy) and Bart Got A Room
Sure Bart Got A Room doesn't appear to be something I'll particularly enjoy (cause its such a UNIQUE story) but William H. Macy does intruige me. The awkward Dad-and-Sex scenes did make me laugh so I give the trialer credit for that. But more importantly is Gigantic. This movie has Zooey Deschanel who's cute perky qualities will be displayed in another dramedy 500 Days of Summer (for that trailer and that review check http://desertcinema.blogspot.com/2009/02/two-indie-romantic-dramedies.html). Gigantic seems to be in a similar vein to that movie. Paul Dano plays the good guy who is destined to get hurt by Zooey. It's not trying to reinvent the wheel, but I love the tone and style I get from both of Deschanel's films. Bart Got A Room - C+, Gigantic - A

Where the Wild Things Are trailer
Sold. I'll let the trailer speak for itself. The music is perfect (Wake Up by Arcade Fire) and the visual style of the wild things seem to be perfect. Grade - A

Great news for the several million people that call themselves Christian Bale fans
Christian Bale is an actor who is talented but really hasn't caught his section of the limelight til now. Sure Batman was big (or so I'm told, I haven't really seen any of his movies) but people can still go through life not knowing who Christian Bale IS! Now here is where you'll really get to know him. Public Enemies is the newest offering from Michael Mann and revolve around John Dillinger played by the phenomenal Johnny Depp. The movie looks to be....*gulp*...the best movie of 2009? Anyone? Anyways, It looks great and no matter how much I talk about it the trailer honestly speaks for itself. Terminator Salvation looks equally as good in a stunning reinvention of the Terminator franchise it seems grown up John Connor will be taking on Terminators that think they're humans....odd right? But brilliant. Sure it looks mildly Transformers-esc but none the less amazing. Terminator - A-, Public Enemies - A+

More of the Dramedy
Adventureland looks like a neat film. Superbad toned down to the level of a movie like Thumbsucker. A real world depicted in Hollywood fashion if that makes any sense. In many ways its like the other film Funny People which is Knocked Up toned down to a movie like Punch Drunk Love. Funny People looks hilarious though (the Die Hard reference had me on the floor laughing. ROTFL is what the kids call it I believe). And the clever way Adventureland's Red Band was presented was great. Both look like winners in their own right. Both - A-

Two "Indie Romantic Dramedies"
I have conflicting views on the term that people have given the "independent romantic dramadies". The name is suitable I suppose but "dramadies" seems...dumb? Regardless my favorite movie ever (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) would fit into the said catagory, as would Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist. Both of these movies seem phenomenal. Breaking Upwards has the hip soundtrack along with unheard of stars and some pithy dialouge, but more importantly seems to be more drama than comedy. But 500 Days of Summer seems to be this years "Juno" as much as I hate the comparison. It has the B-list stars and has the "Intentionally-Indie" vibe we've seen recently. As much as I'd like to knock that style though, it hasn't failed me yet...oh wait...The Wackness. Grades for Both- A-

Se7en Remake Trailer...oh wait...
Apparently this is called The Horsemen, but to be honest it looks strikingly like Se7en only without the Seven deadly sins part and more with the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse...Dennis Quaid what are you doing??

Trailer Duo
But news and notes out of the way.
First is I Love You Man. The new Forgetting Sarah Marshall? Perhaps better? What? Blastphemos? No. This looks great. Jason Segle yelling at strangers doesn't fail to be funny. Even the classic fart jokes seem...witty? Wierd. If I were to describe Race to Witch Mountain as a career killer for the Rock...I mean Dwayne Johnson...I'd be pretty much right. This alien fantasy kids movie takes the ex-wrestler out of his element, and I'm not talking about oxygen. Action films. The guy has a body sculpted like a...well a rock parden the pun, and needs to be in gun shooting, beat-em-up flicks. Not this family drek. I Love You Man - A
Race To Witch Mountain - D

Amazing Trailers
We'll start with the Star Trek trailer, which while I'm not a Treky, I admit looks amazing. I'm not a fan of the intro of the whole car thing and the robot, but after that it's smooth sailing. Zachary Quinto looks great as Spock and I want to see more of Eric Bana, John Cho, and Simon Pegg (all of which merely get 3-4 seconds of screen time in the trailer). JJ Abrahms looks to have done it again. Next up is Che which consists of Guerrilla and The Argentine, two seprate films done similarly to Flags of Our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima 2 years ago. Del Toro looks amazing and this will hopefully garner him an Oscar nod. The trailer itself is rather cryptic, and nothing truly cohearent goes on from what I could tell. Merely short bits and pieces of scenes put togeather to quickly. Up appears to be the latest masterpiece (yes I just used that word) from Pixar. That's all I'll say, the trailer really speaks for it's self. And now, the best comes last, Watchmen. Like the first trailer, the music, lines of dialouge, scene selection, all comes togeather into what...wait for it... is the best trailer of the year. GO WATCHMEN!

Trailer of the Day: Fanboys
This movie has one thing immediately setting it back...it's a movie with more inside Star Wars jokes than the acctual film series. Being a fan of course I found it funny, but the gerneral public? Doubtful. The trailer though is very funny, as it claims to features (for acting) "Princess Leia, Lando Calrissian, Darth Maul, Shooter McGavin (Happy Gilmore character), The wearhouse guy from the Office, the guy from Tropic Thunder, Jay the guy from Die Hard 4, the hot chick from Sin City, and Captian James T. Kirk". It's funny that they don't use the actors names and some of the moments are humorus, but there are some fairly over the top moments. When they "go to light-speed" they lost me. Grade - B

Trailer of the Day: Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince International Trailer
I LOVE the Harry Potter Franchise including for the most part, the movies. The Last Harry Potter film Order of the Phoenix was my favorite in the series. While it was not entirely faithful to the books, it tried its damnedest. This one looks to top any of its previous films. It looks incredibly dark and gritty (just the way I like my films) and visually interesting. Minus the terrible "humor" at the end the trailer is a real winner and should bring the focus from that tween series Twilight, back to Harry. Grade - A-

Trailer of the Day: Changeling
Unforgiven was a great movie, as was Million Dollar Baby. Mystic River practically makes Clint Eastwood's directing talents at status of "god like". Changeling looks to match the emotional impact of those past films and then some. Angelina Jolie = Ocar Nomination like George Lucas = Killing beloved franchises. John Malkovitch looks good as well. For a director with such talents, he certainly doesn't waste them (like that Brett Ratner guy). Grade - A
