Enchanted is cute and fluffy and will be perfect for the upcoming holidays but I don't think it will really have the staying power of the movies it almost blatantly rips off. Sure fairy princesses are fine in cartoons but I don't think they appeal so much outside of it (do YOUR kids know who princess Buttercup is). But that said Enchanted is a fine movie with catchy songs, likable characters and particularly strong performance by Amy Adams.
If you haven't seen the trailer for the movie the plot is about a young Princess waiting her true loves kiss far far away in the cartoon land of Andalasia. When she finally meets her prince the two decide to get married right away. Young prince Edwards evil stepmother decides to get rid of the princess so she pushes her into a fountain, turning all of world from fantasy to reality, literally.
The movie does a great job of integrating enough problems for princess Giselle to face after coming to New York to make the whole plot plausible. Her reactions are funny and joyous and totally fit into the Disney world.
The irony of the whole movie however lies at Adams performance. She delivers a stunningly innocent portrayal of the “damsel in distress” yet is still able to wink to the camera and almost make fun other princesses in the same realm.
The movie does fail on two notes. The first is while the movie is funny, almost all the parts I laughed at are from the trailer. Sure there’s some new content, but nothing nearly as laughable. The second is the ending. I wont spoil it but the actions of the characters seemed logical more the whole film, but the ending makes all this go away. Sure it’s a Disney film, but regardless it leaves you unsatisfied with a bad taste in your mouth. Grade—B+
