Definitely, Maybe is cute and fun and despite the fact you see the ending coming, it still makes for a strangely inventive imagining of the romantic comedy.
One of the biggest things that scared me going into Definitely, Maybe was the fact that it was a chick flick. If we quickly go through a tour of recent date movies we see that movies like P.S. I Love You, No Reservations and Music and Lyrics were generally disliked. However 2008 was able to open in a successfully entertaining romantic comedy.
Ryan Reynolds stars as Will, an average Joe who is struggling with trying to raise his daughter Maya and go through his divorce. Maya learns about the birds and the bee’s in school, which leads to the discussion of how Will met Mayas mom and all of the love interests along the way.

In the beginning Will claims that the story is complicated and it is, which happens to work in the movies favor. As he explains the story, he changes the names of the 3 women he kept falling in love with over the 15 years the story takes place over. Also the lucky ladies happen to be seasoned actresses (Elizabeth Banks, Rachel Weisz, and Isla Fisher) making the chemistry between Reynolds and them believable.
The strongest asset to the movie is its ability to tell the story from simply the mans point of view. Too often we see the romance from the view of either the woman OR both people. We are able to see that Reynolds is not the typical chick flick leading man, but is the stand up noble guy that is sought after in traditional romances. Will is funny, sarcastic and a joker, but also the loving caring George Bailey type.
Also the movie isn’t really a Romantic Comedy, its more of a Romantic, light on the Comedy, which works with the movie in a way that seems natural. The comedy is there, but subtle and less in your face than movies like Dan in Real Life. It also is able to tell its story in relation to real world events with a factual timeline.
My soul faults with the movie lie with the latter half of the film. Things feel rushed, like the producers needed to finish a two and a half hour movie in two hours. Things get overly predictable if you’re heavy in the genre, and tend to be overly sentimental. I liked the fact it ended with a happy ending and evenly balanced the emotional hits Will has to take throughout the whole movie.
Yes, the story is complicated, but in a way that adds to the over all satisfaction received at the end. Definitely, Maybe turned out to be a worthwhile visit to the theaters; sorry you missed out on my attendance Fool’s Gold.
Grade – B+
