Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Review

Indiana Jones remains now, just as much as it once did, a vivid memory of my childhood. The bull whip, the Gold Idol, Sean Connery, they’re all still there despite what was the fiasco Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull . After a much anticipated nearly 20 year wait Lucas and Spielberg decide its time to reveal a movie more important than any of there previous projects.

Does Indiana Jones sparkle like he once did in the transition from 30’s to the 50’s? No. That remains one of my soul issues with Crystal Skull. Overall the time period doesn’t suit Indy as well as the days of WWII. The opening itself seems more of an homage to the era than an Indiana Jones movie.

Of course by now you’ve heard my second problem (If you haven't heard or seen the movie STOP READING!!!!). Indiana is meant to be finding ancient cites and tombs, NOT aliens. By god Lucas what were you thinking putting this in. The Script for the movie falls in the way of itself, almost rewriting what the series had finely established in the past. Area 51 and UFO’s are no way for you to revive a beloved franchise.

That said the film does several good things, the cast being one of them. Cate Blanchett is of course amazing as a Russian communist leader, and Ray Winstone is a good addition to the cast but also wasted through out the movie. Age has not taught Karen Allen well and Shia LaBeouf is an interesting look at the James Dean style bad boys of the 50’s.

Is Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull a bad movie? Not really. Is Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull a bad movie compared to the incredibly high standard set by the previous installments? Yes. If Spielberg and Lucas had tried to go out of their way to make this similar in setting to the others but not as formulaic (we get it, cyptic messages are always written on the ground) then maybe we’d have a winner. Save the Sci-fi for E.T.2 or Jurassic Park 4. Grade – C+
